Jeff
Fitch shared his first exposure to the Venture Crew
and introduced our speaker. Mark and Ben were here
to talk about Winter Wonderland grants in action.
Jeff met Mark at work and steered him onliine to
apply for a grant for this brand new group.
Sertomans gave this unique scouting organization a
$500 award that helped them get started. This
program is the next step beyond scouting for both
boys and girls ages 13-21. The program's goal is to
have the students plan and run the program for
themselves. Venture Crew 405 is the first one in
Minnesota. If you want more information about the
national program go to http://scouting.org/scoutsource/Venturing.aspxI
. A local website is in the works. One project Ben's
crew recently completed was a four week Kodiak Camp.
This is an event for Cub Scouts They built a thermal
shelter which is used for winter camping. They
cleaned up and restored an old Campsite as their
major summer activity last year. The Sertoma Grant
went to purchase cooking equipment for their outdoor
activities. They are looking for more members who
like the outdoors and community service. Mark
compared the group to our Sertoma Club. Venture
groups give the older scouts a chance to continue
under the auspices of the International Boy Scouts.
They also accept members from 4H and FFA. Mark
Stroat is the contact person, to join-call
218-831-8200.

As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you

Note |
Congratulations to Beth Burnard's Polar Plunger who made the
Brainerd Dispatch with her efforts to raise money for Special
Olympics. She sent a thank you for the Sertoma contribution to
her $840 total.
Thirteen curlers helped the Raboin team come in fourth at the

Facebook |
| This is the link to the official Facebook
page for the club. It will now be an interactive
way for members to share pictures and comment on
club activities. As with Walters Wacky
Adventures Page--you can visit it without being
a member of Facebook. Creating a Facebook
account is easy and free. You can limit access
to your page and just communicate with those
people who are really your friends. Signing up
is simple and by creating your "own" page you
give yourself interactive abilities on the
Brainerd Area Sertoma site. You can completely
ignore your personal page if you wish. However,
the profile and information pages may become THE
way for us to update your data base information
in the future. I am also totally available for
phone consultations for people who want me to
walk them through the Facebook site. For
instance--Jeff Fitch has promised me by Monday
you will be able to view his awesome barbecue
pictures. Les Franz also took some photos at the
party and maybe we can get him to join and
upload those!! |

Rumor Corner
|
-
Greg
Straka incurred the wrath of the rumor lady today. She parked a
little bit funky and he tried to convince her they were towing
away her truck. Not good Mr. Second Wind!!
-
Welcome back Joyce Anderson!!!!!!!
-
Karen M was buttering up the dog pound today. HMMM What is the
rest of the story?
-
Charlie Bartels Respite Dining--garlic was a big topic at
today's early Dog Pound chatter.
-
Loann is jealous of Steve Mau and his "radio" voice.
-
Vox Pop teacher bashing wasn't real popular at the newsletter
table today.
-
Steve Mau is paying happy fines for his "step" class. He is on a
roll for physical fitness! The Dog Pound paid a fine for Steve
for putting the C (person of the lighter color race) in dancing.
-
LoAnnism--did we do good? or did we do well? Me N Paul became
Mean Paul Keprios.
-
It is scary that Straka is actually being hired by the Baxter
police. If not the fine was well deserved!!
-
Pig mud bath feet fine Brenda Kelley. She is putting out a new
line of piggy pomades and hog wild beauty treatments.
-
John Raboin's hair is too short to curl and he is too old to
join the boy scouts. He had to pay big bucks for being too
straight and too old!
-
The Dancing Man's dates with Art Becker, Rick Besmehn, Charlie
Bartels got cancelled.
-
Paul Gropper has a magnetic personality--so he paid!
-
The newsletter editor ventured into Cub Foods and got behind
this man in a uniform (white shirt, tie, black pants) leading a
long line of chattering happy school kids on a dance around his
store. We now have to call him the Pied Piper of Cub Foods.
Actually, his helper confided to me that Bryan Jelinsky is
absolutely wonderful with the school groups!! I know they were
singing him a song when I left after taking his photo!!
-
Congratulations
to proud papa JJ Levensky. Happy Steve Mau paid a fine for his
daughter's honors at school. Laura Beilke is very happy her
daughter is going to do her graduate studies at the U of M. Jim
Grant is very happy with his green light from the doctor for his
17th year cancer free.

Notes from your President |
|
"One day your life will pass before you, make sure it worth
watching," was my thought for the day. As President I feel I
should encourage everyone to be very active during Pipe and
Drape season. This is our oldest and really most successful fund
raiser. When you work any hour for Pipe and Drape you are making
an average of $50 to contribute back to the community. We really
need a coordinator who knows how to supervise set ups!! Jeff and
Tad are doing a great job and we need to take responsibility for
helping as much as possible.
