Program
Jessica Gangl who is Brainerd District Manager of Junior Achievement was the presenter today. Jessica was first involved in the program as a volunteer. Founded in1919 this has been active in Brainerd for ten years. She thanked Sertoma for its past involvement with the program and encouraged everyone to consider becoming a volunteer. JA is totally supported by donations, grants and fund raising. Last year the program was in 121 classrooms and involved 3,500 students. JA's mission is to inspire and prepare young people to suceed in the global economy. As a trained adult volunteer one can get involved in grades K-12 and age appropriate curricula is provided designed to enable students to explore career opportunities as well as take advantage of the fact that their "teacher" is an actual person with business experience. Sertoma has helped to sponsor the BizTown program for 500 area fifth graders for several years. This is a day spent "workng" where they operate a replica of a real city and learn first-hand how to become productive community citizens, consumers, and workers in the free enterprise system. She showed some neat photos from Biz Town. There is a new Middle School program that deals with credit cards, insurance, and other daily finance issues. Jessica assured us that volunteers teach valuable lessons through words and actions. This program involves a committment to complete the training and visit the designated classroom 5-6 times. Bryan Barrer who worked with the program for several years until the high school element was cancelled in our area talked about how much fun he had especially working the the economics classes that related directly to his job at Bremer's. Bonnie Cumberland talked about her experiences with the 3rd graders. She talked about what excellent materials were provided for the experience. She remarked, "You get much more out of it that you put into it."
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes, Kari Satre for taking pictures, and Bonnie Cumberland for taking attendance.

Of Note
Keep Kathy Williams in your prayers. She is back in the hospital in Crosby with an abcess that may need surgery.

Congrats to David Downing who is now the Director of Kinship Inc--the statewide program.

Yellow is the New RED--be aware that a new school year is starting and drivers need to be creful of school buses. A yellow flashing light is really a red signal to stop and STAY BEHIND THE BUS!!
Facebook
This is the link to the official Facebook page for the club. It will now be an interactive way for members to share pictures and comment on club activities. As with Walters Wacky Adventures Page--you can visit it without being a member of Facebook. Creating a Facebook account is easy and free. You can limit access to your page and just communicate with those people who are really your friends. Signing up is simple and by creating your "own" page you give yourself interactive abilities on the Brainerd Area Sertoma site. You can completely ignore your personal page if you wish. However, the profile and information pages may become THE way for us to update your data base information in the future. I am also totally available for phone consultations for people who want me to walk them through the Facebook site. For instance--Jeff Fitch has promised me by Monday you will be able to view his awesome barbecue pictures. Les Franz also took some photos at the party and maybe we can get him to join and upload those!!

Business Notes
Bonnie Cumberland would like to be re-elected as Brainerd CityCouncil Member-at-Large. She wants to encourage all the Sertomans to vote on Tuesday, November 2nd. Bonnie has an extensive political background that includes being Brainerd Mayor for 7 years before becoming part of the Council. She has served on a variety of boards and committees and done extensive volunteer work in the community. Her key campaign slogan word is "proven" and she stands on her record..
Rumor Corner
  • The Dog Pound was pretty subdued today. They did welcome back long lost Mark Korte who had dinner and snuck out early on his way to Grand Rapids.
  • The newsletter editor paid a happy fine today for having tread marks instead of hoofprints on her body. She tied her 2000 pound horse to the golf cart for just a minute and decided getting run over by the cart was preferable to getting backed over by the horse. She is signing up with In MOtion Fitness for physical therapy since her very expensive therapeutic bathtub is now leaking and has to be replaced--just when she needs it the most.
  • We were a little light on officers this meeting. Paul Keprios came in looking a tad bit nervous since Bill called him and told him he had to head back to the office and might be late--since Bill was already on deck to replace Mary. Where oh where were all the MONEY people. Fortunately Dave Goos donated his Pot O Gold loot back to the club!!
  • A little discussion about the crazy vox pop attacks on teachers was the topic of conversation at the "good" table today. Actually Steve Razidlo got fined because they have been too quiet about the administrators lately.
  • After Bonnie volunteered to drill flag holes--Lowell let us know it is drilling and praying so he was glad for a little feminine interest.
  • Bill kind of let the crowd run wild today. Lots of visiting time!!
  • Boys n Berries has great pumpkins for sale--Ask George Moore who won the beautiful big one Bob Nibbe brought in. He didn't realize how valuable it was--you cannot buy canned pumpkin in the store because there is a shortage. Pumpkin pie anyone?
  • Vern paid a $1 fine for keeping Sue Slaybaugh honest--she wouldn't let Sue sign her husbands name on some important papers.
  • Terry Curtis paid a "putting it the wrong cracks fine" organized by the Tooth Fairy.
  • Continuing education in Canada cost big bucks for the fishing crew. Someone named Bolt claimed to be the best fisherman.
  • Scotty needs to give out more free samples to get people into his establishment which sells great libations.
  • Happy Fines Laura Beilke was happy she got free samples of the Brainerd Lakes Beer and did get "tipped over" with Ron Morris.
  • Kinship won the rib contest because Sertoma didn't enter. Congratulations to David Downing on his promotion.
  • Jessica is looking into starting a Senior Citizens Achievement group for the Dog Pound.

Notes from your President

This is definitely a "thinking" quote that Mary shared today as she has been sharing thoughts each meeting. Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?" Expediency asks the question, "Is it politic?" Vanity asks the question, "Is it popular?" But, conscience asks the question, "Is it right?". And there comes a time when one must take a position that it is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but one must take it because one's conscience tells one that it is RIGHT.

International News
Convention Report: Mary talked about her gavel pin that she acquired at the International. Mary was a sergeant on Saturday morning for the voting. The President gives out awards to special Sertomans. This year five men got those awards. One of those outstanding Sertomans was a PST district governor and the pin was part of Jon Happajoki's presidency. He decided he wanted to send it "home" with Mary. She was very touched and hopes to wear it with pride. Laura Beilke also attended and we will be getting more information later.
