The
Brainerd Lakes Restorative Justic Project is a
proactive attempt to deal with criminal issues with
teenagers on a one to one basis. Their goal is to
make a difference in a teenager's life. When a crime
is committed in the community they a) focus on the
victim and give them a chance to tell their part of
the story, b) hold the offender accountable and make
them do something to make up for their crime. and c)
set up a face to face confrontations .Cindy Maake is
a volunteer who became involved because of something
she read in the paper. In her job as a facilitator
she firmly believes in the value of these
confrontations. Most offenders never have to be in a
confrontational situation with the people who were
victims of their crime. This focuses on feelings and
behaviors and has a big impact on the offender.
These cases are recommended by the police and offer
an alternative to processing the incident through
the court system. For example Cindy explained about
two best friends who were 16 years old who had grown
apart and ended up in a street brawl. An assault
charge was filed. After the confrontational meeting
both girls had a better awareness of what their
problems were and how to handle them in a more
constructive way. Parents learn to focus on
different ways of dealing with their child's
problems. The facilitators direct the outcome but
the group decides on the final outcome. Community
service, letters of apology, and financial
restitution are the most common resolutions. Cindy
remarked, "I am really glad I read the paper and
decided to get involved in this project."
Roger Lynn is in charge of this project and talked
about the program as a whole. They deal with over
100 kids per year. It saves about $190,000 a year in
court costs. Crow Wing County gets a 69% return on
their investment in this program. This is a
non-profit and they are looking for contributions.
May 1st is a Youth Dinner Concert with $50 tickets
to help the program. Roger is spearheading a task
force to deal with youth violence and is looking for
business people to join. See Todd Dahl for more
information. Thanks

Mike Boen, BL Broadcasting General Manager Wins National Red
Cross Award – Again |
|
|
ST.
PAUL, Minn. (March 27, 2009) – Mike Boen, general
manager of BL Broadcasting in Brainerd, Minn. Won
national recognition from the American Red Cross once
again for outstanding support of community blood drives
in the Brainerd Lakes area. On March 26, the
organization presented the American Red Cross National
Biomedical Partnership Award to Boen at a special dinner
at Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, D.C. In 2006,
Boen received the Red Cross National Biomedical
Achievement Award from the organization.
Boen was recognized for his company’s exceptional
broadcast coverage of more than 70 annual American Red
Cross community blood drives. “Mike and his staff go out
of their way to support every Red Cross blood drive in
their listening area by broadcasting interviews of blood
recipients, donors, coordinators and medical staff,
along with general drive information to keep audiences
in the community informed about the constant need for
blood donations,” said Ed Key, American Red Cross donor
representative.
“I partner with the Red Cross because I believe our
community is very generous and will roll up their
sleeves to help save lives,” said Boen. “Many people are
responsible for this award. Thanks go to Dee Severson,
businesses in the area and hundreds of blood donors who
give the gift of life to those in need." Brainerd area
donors gave more than more than 7,560 pints of blood
last year.
“Since Mike started partnering with the Red Cross,
attendance at blood drives has grown significantly,”
said Key. “His association with other stations in the
state has caused them to increase coverage of Red Cross
blood drives in their communities too. Mike and his
staff have helped the Red Cross save thousands of
lives.” |

-
The fishing crew in the Dog Pound postponed their trip to the
lake tomorrow--pansies were afraid of a little mush.
-
Welcome back Bob Ehrich. Pam Bye hasn't been her for so long she
forgot how to introduce herself.
-
Joyce Mikesh is definitely getting back to fighting shape after
her surgery--long recovery time.
-
Karen Munsterteiger had fun today, it was her turn to take
pictures!
-
Charlie Bartels is offering personalized snow removal service.
-
Brian Lehman introduced himself as John Raboin #1 attorney in
the county. Jeff Olson also did a little stand in for Sheriff
Dahl.
-
Andy Holmes feels a bit schizophrenic--she is participating in
both the church play and the vagina monologues.
-
Mark's April Fool Joke--Winter Wonderland opens tonight. He also
had a prank fire call delivered to our sergeant Mike.
-
The Dog Pound's gambling fund was down--persons in the know
think they rigged to drawing so they could keep going.
-
Happy Fines Jim's Electric is in the portable generator
business.
-
Brian was on his high horse. The Rooster Monologues is his
answer the the V word.
-
Stimulus package from Brian based mostly on the newspaper ads.
Bob Ehrich who hadn't spent any money in Minnesota. Craig paid
for his food advertisement. Jeff and Bryan got Cub Food
advertised well even though Brian started with the wrong food
ad. Missy Lake paid because somebody named TJ is doing roof
work. Sears and Ace Hardware have great lawn cutting stuff--we
might not get to use it this year though.
-
Todd Dahl played on the last winning hockey team from Bemidji.
-
Big Mike recommended shifting ad dollars from print to radio
after Brian's spiel.
-
Hawk got fined for being on TV with his shirt not tucked in.
-
Egregious distribution of coupons got Tim fined along with
Craig.
-
Weather trivia was mostly interesting but not too funny. Lowest
temp was -54 in 1996. Hottest temp was 103 in 1931. The yearly
average snowfall is 43 inches of snow. The highest snowfall 99.1
in l936-37. Highest April snowfall was 13 1/2 inches which
definitely is above the average 2 inches.
