Program

A familiar face stood in front of Sertoma today to encourage all of the business people in the club who have not yet jumped on the Junior Achievement Bandwagon to do so. Jeff Birks first heard about Junior Achievement when he was a Brainerd Noon Sertoma member and has since become a member of their board along with Joyce Anderson. Jeff was joined by fifth grade instructor,Terri Ebinger, who was instrumental in organizing the first efforts in establishing Junior Achievement in the Brainerd area. The program has grown tremendously in ten years especially since the fifth grade moved to Forest View and the group decided that the project was so worthwhile that they would try to include all fifth graders. This means that about $17,000 is spent for expenses to have the K-5 program culminate in the field trip to Biz Town. There students put their business expertise to immediate reinforcement when they become part of a business for the day. Terri remarked, "This is the best hands-on simulated field trip ever". The students work their own business for the whole day and experience all aspects of work including coping with a lunch hour that must involve shopping as well as eating. Joyce shared her experience with her daughter and recommended that anyone who can possibly commit the time should follow a group from kindergarten to fifth grade. The lessons taught by business volunteers promote financial literacy and inspire students on the values of free enterprise as well as teaching work force readiness. Jeff announced their two major fundraisers this fall which include the fifth graders selling subscriptions to the Lake Country Journal for $19.95, $10 of which goes into the program as well as the pancake feed at Appleby's on Saturday September 13th from 8-10. Both Jeff and Terri were interested in promoting volunteers from our group since it takes 120 people to cover the basics with area youngsters. It is a 4-6 week commitment, all materials are supplied and usually takes less than 2 hours a week including prep time. Jeff endorsed the program wholeheartedly and said, "What I get out of this personally is unbelievable!" If you would like to volunteer and didn't attend today's meeting, just see Joyce.

Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.
Announcements
Board Report:  There is considerable debate about the structure for dealing with Winter Wonderland funds and distributing them back into the community. If you would like to have some input, you must attend the next Board Meeting or express your opinion to someone who will be there. Our membership stands at 175 after two drops, one add and one replacement. One other area of concern was the outstanding bills for Pipe and Drape and back dues. We need to establish a centralized location for storing historical documents, club records, etc. An inventory has been conducted so that Sertoma musical equipment will be handed on to the new group that is forming. Remember we have two flag dates soon-Labor Day and 9-11.
Tues, September 16th New Member Induction at Ernies at 5:30.
Next Week is our In-house Chili Cookoff--bring your crock pot of chili by 11:30. Winning recipe will be used for the United Way Chili Cook-off.
If you need to be part of the program--you must keep our committee in the loop. Please schedule your participation at least 6 weeks ahead of time with Kathi Nagorski or Ron Morris.
Wednesday September 3rd, Table Set Up (58) at Cragun's at 9 a.m. Meet at Lake Region Storage before if you can help load.

Of Note
Tom Krekow has made a huge impact on Sertoma, Camp Confidence, and the Brainerd Lakes Area. Many thanks for all you have done for the Club and we wish you well. See Tom's note below.

Shannon Fanth and Dick Stoltman are just two of the recruits who helped with the inaugural SafeEars event at BIR.

Business Notes
To our good friends;
Over the last few months we have been looking at the future of our studio in the Brainerd Lakes Area. We have been looking for means to continue offering the standard of service and artistic excellence many of you have come to expect from our studio. With the increasing choice of many families to "take their own" pictures, with many people believing that they can create great portraiture (or sadly, pictures that are "good enough") with their own computer skills and with a 40% increase in overhead at the Franklin Arts Center, we reluctantly decided that Aaron Thomas photography will close its doors in its Brainerd location.

To that end, Anna has accepted a full time position for 1-3 years in Kansas City, KS and we have been busy settling into our new home and getting our studio office set up there. We have several projects and contracts to fulfill this autumn for our Minnesota customers and will return to the Brainerd Lakes Area monthly (August - December, 2008). We are also redesigning our website to include a calendar to assist our friends and customers in planning exclusive sessions with us during our photo safaris when we "snowbird" back to the Brainerd Lakes area! These will be quarterly "week-in-the-north" trips expressly designed to provide our photography to our loyal customers - and to recharge our batteries with that indefinable something only found in Minnesota!

Please do not hesitate to call (our local number will still be our contact number), email or check in on our website if we can be of service to you. We will be back often!

And thanks again for being part of three great years in Brainerd for our studio and for us.

Best Regards,
Tom and Anna Krekow

Look for the big annual open house celebration at Midwest Family Eye coming up soon!

Help Wanted: Sales and Marketing Committee Chair to work with Laura Beilke to promote Sertoma in the media. Speaking of Laura, she now has a job at Lakes Area Urology.

Many thanks to CTC who was a major sponsor at the Chamber Golf Event. They donated one of their sponsored holes to the Winter Wonderland project so it was promoted at that event.

Rumor Corner
  • Happy Fines from Kathi Nagorski who wanted to encourage everyone to submit photos of family times for their new feature in the Brainerd Dispatch. Uncle Art got to show off his granddaughter who caught so many fish he had to take off his shoes to keep counting them!! Kathi was kind enough to pay Art's fine also. Our president insisted that all parents who were sending their kids off to college for the first time had to throw in a happy buck!
  • Mark Korte let Pam Sachs pull her own ticket today to win the blue ticket drawing. Thanks Nanci Williams for collecting the quarters since Pam was busy taking notes. She insists she didn't peek!
  • Vern Jensen and Bryan Lehman have this running battle going on that ended up being a fight over the designer purse. Legs Brian Kirkpatrick was into being the fashion police today so they got fined big time. Anita Travica and Nate Grotsky called each other up and decided to wear their matching shirts to get fined.
  • Bill Goers was able to get up and fine Bryan Jelinski just because! Bryan just gets out his two bucks when Bill fills in.
  • David Clausen and Darren Larson are in the running for father of the year--they both brought their children to the anniversary party even though it was adults only. Of course they got fined but awww shucks!!
  • Welcome back Brian Skogen!!!!!!!
  • The good guy table had lots of new folks today--the newslady appreciates seeing new faces like Steve Rose and Nanci Williams. Our former member felt right at home because so many people are still in their same old spots!!
  • Everyone is encouraged to attend the next board meeting where some major decisions will be made and everyone is still a voting member. Pam Bye is offering great breakfasts and there was some rumors about Margaritaville.
  • Sue Slaybaugh was threatening to drive her car into the meeting to save herself from paying her no pin fine. She was absolutely certain it was in the car!!
