Jed
Copham made a spectacular late entrance that
completely overshadowed an earlier performance by
our very tardy tooth fairy to tell the Sertoma
Audience about the 28th Brainerd International
Raceway Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. Gates are now open
and they are expecting a crowd like no other. This
is it - the largest motor sports event in the Upper
Midwest! The biggest names in drag racing will be
here: John Force, Tony Schumacher, Ron Capps, Larry
Dixon, Brandon Bernstein and more! Racing starts
Thursday with the nitro cars starting qualifying on
Friday. Zero to three hundred in about four seconds
in a 7,000 horsepower dragster is certainly one of
the most exciting events in racing to witness in
person.
The Nationals don't appeal to everyone, but Jed
encouraged the others to get involved with some of
the local programs that included the Performance
Driving School. BIR is now teaching the police and
others about safe high speed driving. They have a
former INDY driver who "leads the chase". Every
other Wednesday is drag racing organized by a
retired state trooper. It is Street Legal Style and
uses all the bells and whistles the pros use.
Jed was personable and enthusiastic and we thank him
for posing for the camera. According to Jed, his
event is like the circus coming to town. The racers
love Brainerd and the Brainerd community benefits
tremendously from the influx of people who need
goods and services. It takes over 3,000 people
working hard to make this event happen. Three years
ago he and his wife purchased the track. Jeb talked
about the history of the area. Donneybrook opened in
1968 as a simple oval track . Generations of fans
and racers come to BIR to make stories and memories.
In its early years, the track was primarily known
for its road racing, which was the focus of Jerry
Hansen, who bought the track in 1973 and named it
Brainerd International Raceway. Hansen was the
winningest amateur driver in the Sports Car Club of
America history. In 1974, the SCCA Uncola Nationals
attracted 17,000 fans.The Trans-Am series was very
popular among fans, and attracted racers like actor
Paul Newman, who set a lap record in 1977 during the
Uncola Nationals, won races in 1978 and 1979, and
then won his first race as a professional here in
1982. The brochure this year honors Newman who died
in 2008.
The orignal road course did not meet modern day
standards so they have built a new one that should
expand the scope of racing at BIR. Being a positive
part of the community and making BIR stand for "Best
in Racing" are noteworthy ambitions of Jed's. The
audience wanted to know about NASCAR in the
future--building that facility is probably out of
their price range. Jed drag raced and ran a racing
school before coming to BIR. President LoAnn invited
him to consider becoming a member of Sertoma. |

Thanks to all the people who helped out with
Safe Ears at the Fair. Safe Ears will
only be at BIR at Friday. Jim Mayne was
enthusiastic about the interaction with the
crowd even though not too many earplugs were
sold. |

Karen Munsterteiger is looking for the
person who charged something at Cub Foods--George
may have been guilty. It was simply her way
of introducing the new
Sertoma
Expense forms which are now
available on the Sertoma website. You can
also get them from Karen Munsterteiger.
Committee chairs need to sign sheets. Please
use these whenever you need to get
reimbursed for a Sertoma expense. |

September 23rd Chili Cookoff. The
theme is Shoot for the Moon--forty years
since we went to the moon and Woodstock. The
entry fee is $25 for a great marketing tool
and a chance to help out the United Way! Get
your costumes together and plan to enter.
Joe Schulte is stepping down as chairperson
and President LoAnn is looking for someone
to be in charge. |

Schedule |
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

Whenever you arrive in any country, whether it be by
boat, plane or whatever you are vulnerable. You have all
your cash, cards, documents and anything else valuable
on you right at that moment. It is even worse if you
have never been there before and look like you haven't,
there are always people who are willing to "help". Every
precaution you take will help to avoid any potential
problems. After all you do not want someone to "help"
themselves to your belongings, when you have just
arrived. Here are a few tips that should help.
- Before leaving for your trip, try to get some
prior information as to the rough layout of the
airport where you will be arriving. This will help,
to have a vague sense of where you should be going
and where the taxis are located etc.
- Whenever possible, especially in certain
countries we recommend taking either the airport
limousine, or a hotel pick up.
- Never take a taxi that seems just to be hanging
around, offering its services when there is a taxi
queue available.
- Try to keep your wallet and valuables safely
secured in a handbag or in one of your hand luggage.
Keep a small amount of local currency, easily
accessible in a pocket or something, and away from
the majority of your well earned money. You will
need sufficient for the ride into town, a tip
(perhaps) and a little for unforeseen needs like
toll ways or a bottle of water.
- If you have not been able to find anything out
about the airport that you are visiting then ask one
of the airline staff, or the government tourism
booth (if they have one at the airport) for some
assistance, or tips on the best way of travelling.
- Most countries really are very safe, but in
others it is really very advisable to take to take
as many precautions as possible. No matter what, the
most important is that you have a great holiday.

Rumor Corner

-
Maitre
de Joe Schulte and his lovely assistant Luke Schumer did a
splendid job of greeting today.
-
Join Bonnie's Chicken Club--see Charlie Bartels and the dogs for
rules for joining.
-
Queen LoAnn was late enough today to cause a little stir in the
audience.
-
Orange was the color of the day--energize shirts abounded! The
Executive Board was wearing them in style.
-
John Raboin had to cut back on his "friends"--they made his
table smaller!! Queen LoAnn called it the "kiddy table".
-
Welcome back Kari Satre
-
Steve Mau accused our illustrious president of "scaring"people
off when she threatened him with her scepter (the traveling
microphone).
-
Les Franz got energized by LoAnn and it shook him up so much he
forgot his name.
-
Charlie Bartels is now in charge of Straka's nudist colony--too
much information. Several people at my table shuddered.
-
Gus is going to have free botox sessions. He also got razzed for
filming DAP in the parking lot. Terry wanted to know when we
were seeing the new and improved GUS--or the more surprised
looking Gus.
-
Art Becker got compliments for representing the generation that
needs taking care of--his advisors the dog pound.
-
Curling Cuties at the fair fine--John Raboin.
-
Don't put your badge in the quarter bucket. Steve Mau claimed
that Amy ripped his right after his shirt but that didn't save
him. Anyone who leaves early is gonna pay $2 to get out the
door.
-
Charlie Bartels got fined for having a "big one"--inquiring
minds want to know big what?
-
Bob Nibbe paid a happy fine because his van didn't qualify as a
clunker so he is saving $350 a month.
-
LoAnnism--going to BIR as Culligan water delivery her first year
in Brainerd and ending up getting kicked off the racing track by
the guy manning the loudspeaker when she got lost.
