Joel
Sutherland was the major spokesman for his group
from our new baseball team. He brought Jenny Holmes
from the Brainerd Dispatch who is the volunteer host
family coordinator, Marc Jerzak the Vice President
and Dustin Jerak, his son to back him up in his plea
to support baseball in Brainerd. Joel made the
transition from the dog pound to speaker in one
leap. The Lunkers donated $10 to our food shelf
effort. Jenny's job is to see that the students who
play in the league have a safe comfortable
environment while they are here. This program is
only possible because their living arrangements are
donated. The Lunkers play 68 games in the summer and
half of those are road trips. They are starting from
scratch on their list of host families so if you
know of someone who would be interested, let Jenny
know.
The Northwoods League is summer wood bat league.
This is an all-star minor league experience for
students who do not want to give up their
eligibility but still want to work towards a
professional career. . There are fourteen leagues
around the country. The Cape Cod League gets the
largest number of the best players. Our league is
new but is number two. The students get an
experience that looks very good to the scouts since
141 players from the league were drafted to pro ball
last year. Joel shared the phenomenal growth of this
number in the past five seasons. Players from the
Cape get drafted higher, get paid more money, and
get to play more. The Northwoods League players
however, are outperforming the ones drafted from the
more prestigious group. Joel attributes this to our
grueling schedule that has to squeeze all those
games into such a short time span which is excellent
training for minor league play.
Great publicity, promotional opportunities, music,
great food and fun things at the park are definitely
a big part of the plans for this year. Great give
aways are planned for the kids. This will be a
family oriented and affordable. One of Joel's
specialties is bringing in great guests. Joel has
had plenty of experience with the success in St.
Cloud. They have had everything from Roscoe from
Dukes of Hazard to American Idol contestants.
Regular prices are $8 and $6. They are trying to
keep their concession prices down also.
Mike Bialka from the Brainerd Dispatch attended the
meeting at Joel's request. Joel promised him a great
opening day guest and announced that Harmon
Killebrew will throw out the first pitch. Our own
Cub Foods is sponsoring Opening Day. Joel's mottos
is "We Will Show You Different". The new management
wants include the community and is offering
volunteer opportunities. He remarked, "We have new
team, a new look, and everyone is invited to take
part in the excitement!" Be sure to consider a
Lunker's game as a company outing. There will be a
welcoming lunch May 28th that will include sponsors,
players, and of course the guest of honor Harmon
Killebrew.
Mike Boen asked Joel to explain his bigger and
better philosophy. Some of the highlights Joel
bounced off his Sertoma audience included attempting
to promote at least a thousand people every game. He
wants 1/3 of the people in the area to at least see
one game and come out early because the schedule
starts off with a bang. Joel is not worried about
the skeptics who dwell on the past. He wants to
create a safe environment for kids. The team is
unusual since he focuses on schools who have
outstanding kids who are not in the top 25. The
games will be on KVBR giving more exposure to the
young team players who are trying to make to
professional baseball. Joel was very enthusiastic
and remarked, "You get to do it all in the
Northwoods League!" Joel certainly seems to love his
job and love the game. Tickets go on sale on April
3rd. Winners of the prizes were Jim Mayne, Art
Becker, Kristin Larson, Dick Stoltman. |

Notes from your President |
|
We have been asked to participate in the March Food Share
Campaign sponsored by the Salvation Army. The March campaign is
very important since it determines the amount of funding
allocated throughout the year to purchase more food for the
shelf. Food and dollars donated stay in the community. Money
donations work through the Second Harvest Food Bank and actually
allows the Salvation Army to buy more food per dollar so
monetary donations are welcome. The weakened economy has
increased the demand for services and this is one way to help
those struggling with these issues for the first time. If
everyone brings one non-perishable food item to each of our
March meetings, we can make a significant contribution to the
cause. |
