Nancy Cross spoke about the huge Fourth of July Celebration
which continues in spite of setbacks in fundraising. She
presented three major new facets of the celebration and
directed us to
brainerdcommunityaction.org to check on further details
and for a copy of the schedule. River Road is closed this
year. Reserved parking is happening in the school parking
lots to offset the costs ($20 per slot), and donation cans
are being placed around the community. Kathy Williams
encourage Nancy to share "the rest" of her job which is year
round. Basically her group is set up to assist non profits
and act as a fiscal agent for those who need to be under an
umbrella to operate. A good example is Youth As Resources
which is under the direction of Laura Beilke.
Great in 08 is over. Cathe Picek, Joe Schulte and Rory Coit
survived (we had our doubts about Rory Saturday night when
he totally lost his voice). These three and the rest of the
committee received a standing ovation today. For pictures go
to Tom and Pam's Convention Photos at webshots. Check back since Tom has
not yet posted his photos. The Convention news article with
pictures is on a separate page which you can reach by
clicking here.
Thanks to Gary Loge and the great crew
that showed up to clean our ditches.
Flag captains may be getting their teams
together to complete the flag work
before the first set up which is May
17th, Flag Day.

Greeter
Schedule
Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there.

Sertoman of the Day
Sheriff
Todd Dahl who billed himself as a hometown boy was today's
honored Sertoman. Todd was proud of the fact that he graduated
in 1983 from Brainerd High School and finished out his education
at Bemidji. He was brought into the club by Carol Winegar, who
also introduced him to his wife, Sue They have been married for
sixteen years and have two children. Incidentally Sue is the
office manager for Bender Winegar dental office. Todd's hobbies
include being a youth coach in many of the sports that Eryn and
Peter are involved in. He also loves his motorcycle, running,
hunting, and teaching martial arts. He currently has about 130
employees under him in the Crow Wing County Sheriff's
Department. The fifty deputies are gearing up for the Governor's
Fishing Opener in the Brainerd area next weekend. He of course,
made fun of all the people from Cass County who could not have
voted for him. His most embarrassing moments involved "losing"
his squad car when it took off without him and a Vacationland
Alarm that involved some smooth moves. He is a firm believer in
service to mankind and has been involved in the Haiti mission.
This was a prime motivation in joining the club but he also
liked the fact that we are a "fun" group. He remarked, "Thanks
for allowing me to be your Sheriff and allowing me to be a
Sertoman."
Of
Note
Bonnie Cumberland took a moment to thank Sertoma for their
generous outpouring of support in her recent bereavement. She
remarked, "Thank you, I have always known I was blessed to have
my fellow Sertomans in my life."
Laura Beilke's son was one of
the recipients of a Sy Gau Scholarship. Congrats!
Business Notes
Two
of our active members have changed business names
recently. Paul Heinlen is now with Tower Properties a
subdivision of Weichert Realtors.
As you can see by
Carole Paulsen's new logo, her business not only has
changed its name but it will move to a new location,
15229 Edgewood Drive in Baxter on May 20th.
Rumor Corner
Pam Sachs took the best group photo at the Great in 08
Convention. Everyone in the large group of Brainerd Noon
Sertomans who gathered in the corner was laughing at her wobby
imitation of Tom Krekow on top of the chair.
Charlie Bartels is now running "Wasted Partners".
LoAnn Reponen was today's fill in president. Her co-workers
wanted to know if we were addressing her by her business title,
"Your hiney hoo".
A certain person whose first name is Karen was elected District
Governor this past week and she was accused of a little queening
also. It had something to do with new hair-dos and slitted
skirts.
Bryan Jelinski had a ball filling in as sergeant and left Mary
with a few Boring fines to collect. He was especially anxious to
collect his "Why didn't you play a polka fine?" from his fellow
accordion player and introducer of the stars, Bill Goers.
Dave Clausen claims he doesn't know how to text and was just
looking at his phone calendar. His boyish good looks got him by
without a fine.
Sheriff Dahl brought a professionalism to fine collecting today.
It didn't daunt Anna Gorecky (the roll stealer, check out the
pics for her in caught in the act picture with roll basket in
hand). Charlie claimed she wasn't scared of handcuffs cause she
had her very own.
Lowell
Carlson's alarm went off when his Viagra kicked in or so the
rumor went flying around the dog pound.
Art Becker set a record-six ditch picks in a row and no bath.
For a while there Art was landing in the water filled areas with
regularity. Unfortunately there are no pictures to prove this
one since Pam stayed home to work on her Convention pictures.
Dick Stoltman actually took his wife out to eat last
week--according to Bryan they were strolling the aisles of Cub
Foods collecting samples.
Kari Robinson got fined for wearing her Kixter jacket today--the
sergeants felt she was a bit old for the part.
John Raboin showed up at a Sertoma event to work twice this past
week! He was caught helping at registration and today he greeted
and flunked ticket ripping. Rumor has it there is a class action
lawsuit pending for those who got tickets with no numbers.
Paul Heinlen is giving lessons in Breaking and Entering.
And finally Mary Marana gave the wobbly shoe award to LoAnn
Reponen who caught caught flat footed without these beauties
(she was barefoot to keep from wobbling, come to think of it
wobbly Pam took her shoes off too before climbing on the
photographer's chair. Hmm? Is this the start of a fashion
trend?)
