Program
The Sertoma Program focused on two causes again this week. The group was privileged to view the "pudgy guy" and his unicycle. Gary Walters is very passionate about his work with Kinship Partners and very appreciative of the spirit of adventure that it has imbued in his life. He has swam, biked, walked and sat to raise money and promote mentoring with Kinship. His current effort which he hopes will raise about $20,000 is a 24 hour unicycle marathon. Since his unicyle skills are very limited and not likely to get any better by Wednesday, October 15th, this is labor of love and humor. Gary encourages you to join him at the high school track after the football game. Saturday the 16th is unicycle day where people will be encouraged to try unicycling and the area will be open for bicycles and roller bladers as well. Anyone who donates $100 will receive a t-shirt. Gary remarked, "For the last six years I have gotten to do the coolest things ever." He hopes the community will continue to be generous in these difficult times.
Justina Richter is a spokeswoman for the Eating Disorder Association of Central Minnesota. Her primary purpose in speaking to the group was to raise awareness of the serious problems of eating disorders. One out of every five women will have an issue with food. Overall the statistics are rising and including 10 million women and 1 million men in the United States who are currently suffering from one of three major eating disorders. She explained the difference between anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. She also answered questions and was able to provide her personal insight into the problem. She is totally recovered from her high school bout with anorexia. One of the problems of the disease is the lack of treatment facilities locally. Her association started a support group in 2001 that works with both supporters and sufferers. They meet the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. At Lord of Life Church in Baxter. Justina blames a great deal of the problem on the media and the skewed view most people have of their body because of media influence. She quoted from their brochure which states. "The average American woman is 5'4" and weighs 140 pounds. The "ideal" woman portrayed in the media is 5'11" and weighs 117 pounds.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.
Announcements
Winter Wonderland Sign-up has begun. Cathe Picek has committee charts--at this time please indicate which area or areas you can work with. Also if you could step in as committee chair, please attend one of the next meetings at Lord of Life Church at 8 a.m. on Friday morning or contact Cathe if that isn't possible for you.
Cathe also informed us that our quarterly report has been submitted. Since we now are classified as a 501c because of the merge of the Foundation and Sertoma International, we do have to prove our status. We do this by turning in our voluntary hours--please fill out the cards monthly and DON'T FORGET YOUR NAME!! If you bring a non Sertoman to help at a volunteer project-just turn the card over, put down their name and hours and you will get the credit for that time worked.
Curling Open House--join the Sertoma team. Saturday, October 11 from 10-6 at the Crosby Arena.
Thanks from Bob Ehrich for the great response to the need for volunteers at Forestview. He has filled his two day shifts and will be calling the volunteers to confirm.
The football flags were very impressive again this year. President Korte thinks this should be a permanent addition to our flag schedule. Thanks to those who helped put up the flags for the big game.
October 24th Tent City ( a program to help the homeless) Needed 5-10 volunteers to help with activities. Call 454-0464 for more information. For more details about the program watch your email.
October 15th-16th Kinship Partner Unicycle Event High School track field after the Wednesday game. Come and help Gary support Kinship.
Thanks to all who participated in the Ditch Pick last week. It was a beautiful day, Rick Besmehn was a gracious host, and the food was delivered hot and delish from TJ's Log Cabin. Thanks to social director Nanci Williams also.

Remember: As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you can't be there.

Of Note
Joyce Mikesh thanked everyone for their thought and prayers during her recent "heart" scare but she assures us that she is now ready for her back surgery.

Plan on attending the October 22nd meeting to meet the 6 winners of the design contest for kids for Winter Wonderland. "Stuffers" are need at Lakes Area Senior Center from 11 a.m. To 1 p.m. To work on the display books of the children's designs.

The Chamber Dinner did recognize 4 of our members for outstanding contributions to the community at their festivity. President Korte congratulated them all on their honor.

Rumor Corner
  • Our Prez bowed to the dog pound today. They were quite confused about their duties which included starting the meeting and ringing the bell!
  • The Kinetico fellas and Craig all got into a bit of a tattle tale session, but no worries it cost them all money.
  • Poor Bryan Barrer had to admit that he worked with the missing Pot guy and so he collected fines. (By the way that is Pot O Gold not the other garden variety)
  • Brian Leg's Kirkpatrick made a rather gross proctologist joke at the expense of our circus boy (you can see him on YouTube trying to learn his unicycle skills if you go to www.kinship.org.
  • Anna Gorecky brought greetings from Shannon Fanth who was too busy hair-bending to attend today.
  • DAP had to pay $2 because he sounded much too knowledgeable in his debate.
  • David Clausen celebrated the fifth birthday of his son with a happy fine today. This is Jesse with Santa at Winter Wonderland-it is Pam Sachs' absolute favorite photo of the season.
  • Tina Dunlap was also happy today for the help the Sertomans gave the Good Samaritan home recently on a patio project.
  • Buying beer, drinking it and contributing the cans to Cans for Confidence is not an activity that can be written up on your volunteer cards Dog Pound.
