Program
Four years ago or so, someone from Lutheran Social Services spoke to our Sertoma group on behalf of their Meals on Wheels Program. I was inspired to volunteer because the people who would be receiving these meals were about the age my parents would have been had they lived a long life. I lost both of them within two years of each other way back when I first started teaching. It was then my privilege to become very good friends with my favorite customers--Andy and Esther. They lived in their own home and had a daughter who came every day but they were so appreciative of the meals program. When I first started, Andy would meet me at the door with a tray for the food. After a while I wormed my way into the house by insisting I had to come in to tell my "Andy" joke and met Esther. They had been sweethearts for 60 years and Andy took care of Esther since she was incapacitated by a foot problem. Needless to say, we adopted each other and continued a special friendship until they both passed away this year. I would never have had the privilege of knowing these wonderful people if I hadn't volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Once a week (which is what most drivers do) I go to the senior center and pick up 8-10 dinners to be delivered in the Baxter area. At one stop, I meet with the cousin of an old friend of mine from my Motley days and we talk for a moment about her. Then I go on to a beautiful log home built in the woods by a loving family for their wheel chair bound parents. He meets me at the door and often gives me an envelope or two to put in the mailbox on my way out. Then I get to deliver a meal to someone who knew my parents and me back when I was in high school and college. I often go away with some little memento she has found for me including the Monty's Riding Stable sweatshirt her son wore when he worked for my Dad. The next lady always saves the paper for me that day--I wanted it one day to cut out an article and she remembers so I take it. The next couple is one where I really like her and have trouble warming up to him, but we speak pleasantly as possible and on I go. My favorite part of the next stop is my buddy Casey. She is this extra special dog that inherited some of my dog's hand-me-down toys when Silly died. She used to greet me at the door with an old towel or something strange. Now, it is that purple guy that Silly used to love or his fuzzy bear. If I haven't convinced you yet to volunteer, here are the facts. Jane Cross, who is herself a volunteer, explained the Lutheran Social Services meals program that is county wide. Meals are paid for based on cost if the patron can afford it. Otherwise social services or LSS picks up the tab. They are planned by a dietician and provide a variety of well-balanced meals. This is a non-profit program aimed at keeping senior citizens in their homes longer. Jane is a member of Brainerd for a Lifetime, an organization which is dedicated to creating a network of these kinds of services. Brainerd Meals on Wheels is the largest site in the area. They deliver approximately 125 dinners Monday through Friday and usually need 50 drivers per week. The routes usually take about 45 minutes and can be covered in a lunch hour. For example Mid Minnesota Credit Union handles one whole day by themselves, scheduling their employees to do the work. The biggest need now is for substitutes and those willing to take over when the snowbirds leave the area. Call Lucy a weekday morning at 218-824-6026 to ask questions or get on the list.
The service is going to be expanded into rural areas through combining bundled frozen meals with companion services. Those who volunteer for this would be visiting someone once every two weeks to run errands and deliver the frozen meals. Another new aspect of the program is Senior Dining. For a cost of $3.50, people who qualify can pick up tickets at Bremer Bank that can be used at Country Kitchen for the Seniors Menu planned by the dietician.
Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes.

Sertoma Salvation Army Food Drive Brian Lehman has asked for the club's help to fill the Salvation Army Food Shelf in the next month. Bring 5 cans of food to next week's meeting, write a check for $5 to $10 and ask your place of business or employer to match that contribution and we will be able to help the food shelf get through a lean period.
As you are planning your calendar for the next few months-keep Winter Wonderland volunteering in your mind. Any time you can spare at the end of October through the holidays would be appreciated.

Sertoman of the Day

Shannon Fanth who joined Sertoma because Anna Gorecky told her to do it was today's honored Sertoman. Actually Shannon moved here from the Twin Cities and wanted to join a group to meet new people and give back to the community. Shannon works for Fine Line Hair Design. They're located in Brainerd's Historic Whitehouse and offer hair artistry, nail salon services, spa services and a unique line of gifts and clothing. They have 35-30 employees and she is the manager. Shannon mentioned their complete services include eyelash extension which she proceeded to demonstrate. Shannon has been a member for a year and is currently a member of the rookie class that is working to have the best rookie party ever or at least one that is better than last year! She is unmarried, attached to a fellow she left behind her, and lives with Gus (the cat). She likes to read and write in her journal and loves her move to the country. She is close enough to Best Buy to indulge her taste for music, music, and more music. Shannon related a little Oscar Meyer bologna story involving a first date, pasta, and an English teacher.

Of Note
Congratulations Rory Coit on your new position at Range Printing.

We received a thank you note from Katie Kelly for our sponsorship in the Miss MN Deaf and Hard of Hearing competition.

Lester hopes to be home Friday!!!!

Rumor Corner
  • Poor Amie is now in charge of the crazy people in business workshop--at least that is what she paid a fine about today.
  • Brian got our attention when he said that his theme for today's fines was sex. He proceeded to ask our Sertoman of the day to do something immediately about our Prez and his "do".
  • Uncle Art is now retired in both Brainerd and Aitkin (he was getting a job in with Chuck Brenny who has expanded his insurance business to Aitkin.)
  • Welcome back Tim OKeefe!
  • John Raboin vs the Harlem guys--that's worth the price of admission alone.
  • Our Sertoman of the day got a big chuckle when she said she usually doesn't do first dates--needless to say all the fellows in the crowd elaborated on that one!
  • Mike Boen has to come up with a better companion in crime for his gang buster dreams. Angela Jolie? Pamela Anderson? Anybody but Rick Besmehn!
  • Aaron Meester and Stevie Ray Mau were exchanging coolers full of beer today. HMM no offers to share though.
  • Todd Alguire got fined for being the only realtor not playing golf today.
  • The Dog Pound has analyzed Viagra. According to Art. Brian and Bill, it is 50% Miracle Grow and 50% Fix a Flat!
